NONPROFIT LEADERSHIP,
STRATEGY & SUSTAINABILITY

ABOUT ME

Hello! My name is Ben Murphy and I’m a seasoned nonprofit leader focused on sustainable community development, public policy, social impact, and inclusive growth through operational excellence and innovation.

The central question behind my work is, “if a nonprofit went away, how would people be able to tell it had made a difference?” In other words, are nonprofits actually solving problems?

My work is premised on three core beliefs about nonprofit human services organizations:
1.) Nonprofits exist to serve the community and society (not donors or boards);
2.) The goal of a nonprofit should be to put itself out of business by having tangible, sustainable impact on social need; and
3.) Nonprofits must be actively involved in catalyzing public/social policy reform that would render their work unnecessary through the changing of systems and structures that underlie the causes of poverty and inequality.

RESUME

I have 23 years of experience in social sector operations, development, strategy, and governance. RESEARCH / PROJECTS

SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP NEW YORK

SOCENTNY is a new beta concept aiming to connect social entrepreneurs, investors, and start-up resources across New York State. The goal is to have the site complete and formally launched by 2021.

GLOBAL SOCIAL IMPACT BOND (SIB) DATASET

A natural outgrowth of my background in social entrepreneurship and my work in nonprofit development has been a growing interest in social finance. I am working on a web-enabled, global social impact bond (SIB) dataset in my [nonexistent] spare time.

UNIVERSAL BASIC INCOME (UBI) DATASET

I am a finance and economics nerd. One of the current global experiments I am most interested in is Universal Basic Income (UBI), so I am building a web-enabled dataset in order to learn more. This may evolve into Ph.D. work exploring the praxis of public policy considerations related to UBI.

INCLUSIVE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

My recent nonprofit work has fallen into the world of economic development, and so I’ve become intent on learning more about how governments can be more intentionally inclusive in their work.

DEVELOPMENT PORTFOLIO
Public/Private Grants & Leveraged Funding

My development work has resulted in $113.1 million ($49.7 million in direct awards, leveraging an additional $63.4 million in public/private funding) entering our upstate New York communities, creating 167 jobs, and serving thousands of families and individuals.
